Recession Effects

PORTLAND, Ore. (Feb. 4, 2009) – Requests for emergency food continue to reach record levels throughout Oregon.

According to the Oregon Food Bank Network of regional food bank’s second-quarter reports, distribution of emergency food boxes increased 15 percent in Oregon between July 1 and Dec. 30, 2008, compared to the same period in 2007. Five out of 20 regional food banks report increases greater than 25 percent in distribution of emergency food boxes.

In the Portland metro-area alone food requests went up 15.7%, but in areas like Astoria, Grants Pass and Tillamook where the finishing industry has taken a hit those percentages were up by 40.4%, 39.3% and 23.3%, respectively.



In my circle of friends I don't know anyone that is in foreclosure, or has lost their job (yet) but that doesn't mean that there aren't those around us that are suffering because of the economy.
