What standards?

Just read Robert Wrights Opinionator piece from yesterday. It was a gas. And, it brings up some awesome points about human behavior and civilized civilizations.



"Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan worried that the more common social pathologies became, the more common they would become, because the recurring spectacle of them would render them more acceptable." Ok, I love that. I'm serious. Just think--"Hey, bitch!" is today a common and (in some circles) acceptable salutation for females. As is calling someone a douche. Hey 16 year olds, do ya'll actually know what a douche is? I didn't think so...


"But the logic of Moynihan’s argument suggests that fewer people were cheating than would have been cheating if everyone had known how many people were cheating." More people would wear their jeans 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 times between washes if they knew how infrequently everyone else was washing their jeans. Ha. Lets get that in Fox News and really start to tackle our global warming and diminishing resource problem.


"Everyone purports to support a rule that many of these people in fact violate, but so long as the violations are rarely publicized, the number of hypocrites doesn’t grow, and the rule — in this case the norm of monogamous fidelity — stays more or less intact; at least, it stays strong enough to keep the whole system of marriage from collapsing." Touche!
